When choosing a book, the cover is the first thing a prospective reader will see of your work. This is true whether the person’s browsing on-line for an ebook or whether they are looking at books in a traditional high street bookstore. A well-designed book cover will arouse initial interest and make the prospective purchaser want to open the book to find out more.

When designing a cover for an ebook, it’s important to remember that in digital outlets such as Amazon’s Kindle Bookstore, the image of the cover on the book's product page is displayed relatively small. The cover is in effect, an oversized thumbnail. With this in mind, the book’s title and the author’s name should be displayed as prominently as possible. For the same reason, the cover imagery should be bold and not too intricate or over-fussy. The cover imagery should also give a strong indication of what's contained inside the cover - the genre, topic, setting and mood.

If you already have a suitable cover for your work, perhaps a cover from a book that has previously been published as a physical book, we will be happy to use it for your ebook. However, before submitting the cover, please contact the original publisher/designer to ask their permission to use it for your new ebook version. Some publishers and designers may refuse permission, while others will allow you to use the book’s original cover provided they receive an acknowledgement. If you intend to provide us with a cover, please send it as a jpeg file and make sure that the longest edge is at least 2000 pixels. A jpeg image of around 2000 pixels in height with a width of 1400 pixels will be ideal. We don't mind if the cover you send us has been scanned from the original book, provided the scan's resolution has been set high enough to produce a quality image.
